In the initial feasibility study, Handford Homes considered a 4-storey block design for this project, maintaining the existing footprint. However, we re-evaluated the approach, drawing inspiration from urban observer Jan Gehl’s work and addressing social concerns related to the site. We shifted to a two-block arrangement to improve security and surveillance in line with Secure By Design standards.
By opening up the site to Grimwade Street, we aim to enhance passive surveillance, promote positive social behaviour, and create a welcoming environment. Our client’s requirements included security, quality amenities, parking, and cycle provision.
